LAS TERRENAS: The Village

Geographical situation :

Located in the Greater Antilles, the Dominican Republic divides its island with Haiti. Bordered in the South by the Caribbean Sea and in the East and North by the Atlantic Ocean, it is an island which presents very diversified landscapes: mountain, beach, plain...the peninsula of Samana is located at the North-East of the island, long of an about sixty kilometers and twenty broad, the peninsula of Samana offer all the beauties and contrasts of the country..

The climate is strongly moderated there by the trade winds. Its principal cities are Samana, Sanchez, and Las Terrenas. Samana is a destination for the in love ones with nature. One finds at the same time mountain, luxuriant tropical forest there, marvellous wild white sand bays and beaches stretching itself on kilometers.

Bordered of coconuts and surrounded of small islands, the bay of Samana is very picturesque and still remains very wild and authentic. Green mountains, long beaches, loneliness, small typical villages, water turquoises.

Samana is finally a good choice for the tested plungers, and the place where it is necessary to be to admire the whales .

The péninule of Samana is certainly the jewel of the Dominican Republic and Las Terrenas a small haven of peace where cohabit harmoniously the local population and a broad foreign community (including nearly 1.500 French), living peacefully at the rate/rhythm of the merengue, far from the beachcomber of mass of the "whole inclu" of the southern coast.

As for old European routards installed here for more than 20 years, they have been made a pleasure of telling that there is only 15 years the village had neither electricity nor running water and that it was necessary more than 10 hours by the track to join the capital (4 H today and 1. 30 tomorrow by the motorway in construction)..
